NASA is officially searching for candidates to step into one of the most prestigious leadership roles in human spaceflight: flight director at Mission Control within the Johnson Space Center in Houston. As human exploration enters a pivotal era—bridging ongoing operations on the International Space Station with deep-space voyages to the Moon and Mars—these leaders will shoulder real-time responsibility for mission safety and success.
Leading the Next Generation of Deep-Space Missions
Flight directors hold ultimate real-time authority over space missions, directing teams of flight controllers, astronauts, and international and commercial partners from Mission Control. Those selected for this class will oversee crewed operations aboard the ISS, spearhead lunar expeditions under the Artemis campaign, and lay the operational groundwork for humanity’s first journey to Mars.
To qualify, applicants must be U.S. citizens holding a bachelor’s degree in engineering, biological science, physical science, computer science, or mathematics, alongside substantial professional experience managing high-risk, time-critical decisions. Selected candidates will undergo rigorous training in spacecraft systems, operational leadership, and crisis management, taking their place at the helm of American space exploration.
