
NASA Ramps Up Support for ESA’s Rosalind Franklin Mars Mission
NASA has officially greenlit the implementation phase of the Rosalind Franklin Support and Augmentation (ROSA) project, bolstering its commitment to the European Space Agency’s ambitious Mars mission.
Slated for launch in 2028, this pioneering rover will be the first of its kind to delve beneath the Martian surface in search of past or present signs of life.
While ESA leads the mission and provides the core spacecraft architecture, NASA is stepping in with critical hardware.
This includes specialized braking engines for the landing platform, radioisotope heater units to keep the rover’s internal systems warm in the freezing Martian environment, and state-of-the-art mass spectrometer components for the Mars Organic Molecule Analyzer.
To get this extraordinary payload off the ground, NASA has selected SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy rocket, which will lift off from the historic Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
It is truly exciting to see such robust international collaboration paving the way for the next great leap in planetary exploration.
