These are known as Near-Earth Objects, or NEOs, and a significant portion of them remain entirely undiscovered.
Because a collision with a large celestial body could lead to catastrophic consequences for our planet, detecting these hidden wanderers early is an urgent priority for humanity.
To address this critical challenge, a revolutionary spacecraft known as the NEO Surveyor is currently taking shape.
With a targeted launch date set for no earlier than September 2027, engineering teams across the United States are working tirelessly to integrate and test its complex components.
Historically, ground-based optical telescopes have struggled to spot the most elusive threats.
Asteroids that are as dark as charcoal reflect very little sunlight, and those approaching from the direction of the Sun are easily lost in its blinding glare.
The NEO Surveyor overcomes these limitations by utilizing a completely different observational method.
Instead of relying on visible light, this cutting-edge space telescope is explicitly designed to survey the cosmos using infrared wavelengths.
When an asteroid is bathed in sunlight, its surface absorbs the energy and emits faint heat, which manifests as infrared radiation.
Equipped with highly sensitive dual-channel infrared detectors, the NEO Surveyor can literally sense the thermal glow of these dark, hidden objects.
The observatory will be positioned at the Sun-Earth Lagrange point 1 (L1), a gravitationally stable region located about a million miles from our planet.
From this strategic vantage point, it will continuously scan immense swaths of the sky for at least five years.
By accurately measuring the sizes, compositions, and trajectories of these potentially hazardous bodies, this mission will grant humanity the crucial advance warning needed to safeguard our future.
